Getting Started with the Redwood Campus Wireless LAN
(SSID) RCCRWC1

The Rogue Community College Wireless LAN requires a wireless network card installed on your laptop. The Wireless Access Point supports only the 802.11b and 802.11g standards at this moment. The RCC network only supports Windows 2000, XP and Mac OS X 10.2.x.

The Wireless Network card (adapter) can be purchased at www.Staples.com, www.cdwg.com, www.circuitcity.com or other similar outlets.


Configuring the Wireless Network Card:

Having installed the wireless network card and device drivers on your laptop, these one-time configuration steps must be completed before using the card. Below are instructions for Windows 2000 and Windows XP operating systems:


Windows 2000

  1. Install the pc card and turn on Laptop
  2. The laptop will find the driver for the card (“New Hardware found”)
  3. Name of device is (“Your Card Name” Wireless LAN PC Card, or the card you purchased
  4. Open up Wireless Network Connections (Start / Control Panel / Network Connection (click))
  5. Right Click on “Wireless Network Connection – Your Card Name Wireless LAN PC Card” and go to Properties”
  6. Under the “General” tab click on Configure
  7. Under the “Advanced” Tab click on enter Value: RCCRWC1 (case sensitive)
  8. Click OK

Windows XP

Using Microsoft Zero Wireless Configuration Utility

  1. Install the pc card and turn on Laptop
  2. The laptop will find the driver for the card (“New Hardware found”)
  3. Name of device is the card you purchased.
  4. Open up Wireless Network Connections (Start / Control Panel / Network Connection (click))
  5. Right Click on “Wireless Network Connection – Your Card Wireless LAN PC Card” and go to “Properties”
  6. Under the “General” tab click on Configure
  7. Under the “Advanced” Tab click on enter Value: RCCRWC1 (case sensitive)
  8. Click OK

  1. Highlight RCCRWC1
  2. Click on Connect
  3. Click OK to exit
The site survey should look like this.




The Network Authentication should be set to “Open” as this connection is outside of the firewall.

The Data Encryption is set to “Disabled” as this connection is outside of the firewall.

Click OK

Frequently asked Questions!

"I tried the wireless internet access in the cafeteria today and it was very slow."

The internet suffers slowdowns during peak business times and, as a result, it is slow for everone. Other issues affecting the speed of the Internet and the quality of the wireless link are; your network card, the numbers of users connecting to the Access Point, and the type of activity you are trying to perform, such as downloading large files. Large downloads will slow all wireless connection for everyone, so try to do your downloading at home with a broadband connection, everyone using the Wireless Access Point will thank you.

"Are things like MSN,Yahoo, and AOL Messenger working?

Yes, as this connection is outside of the RCC firewall these services do work, but be aware that your laptop is vunerable to other forces, you may want to use the built in Microsoft Internet Connection Firewall for some added protection.

"How about Outlook, will e-mail work?"

Yes, student e-mail can be accessed through Outlook Web Access at http://student.roguecc.edu/
